A DAY AT THE FARM

30/08/2014

Living in London is exciting but every so often, I have an immense urge to leave it’s urban dwellings and head out to more peaceful pastures and for some fresh country air. When my friend suggested a day trip to a Pick Your Own farm on the outskirts of the London metropolis, she didn’t have to ask me twice.

A 30 minute train ride out of Waterloo station and we were in Esher, a tranquil, picturesque village in Surrey. Garsons Farm is then a short journey from here. I’m always surpirsed at how very little time is required to travel out of London, to feel like you are in the countryside.

RASPBERRY AND MANGO ICE POPSICLES

28/08/2014

It is still officially summer in the Northern Hemisphere, but I can sense that it is coming to an end. Did anyone else feel like summer flew by too quickly this year? Perhaps it’s the sudden drop in temperature of late or I can see that the trees are starting to shed their leaves. Nevertheless, I won’t let that stop me from making fruity ice popsicles using some of the fruit I recently picked on my farm outing.

HANDMADE PASTA WITH BASIL PESTO

13/08/2014

I don’t make homemade pasta all that often but I love Italian food. I have a cook book by the talented and charismatic Antonio Carluccio, which I enjoy perusing from time to time. Today, I was inspired to make a simple pasta dish. Handmade pasta isn't hard to make but it does require time, patience and arm strength, especially when I don’t own a pasta machine! I will admit that I didn’t roll this batch as thinly as I should have. By adding wholemeal flour, it adds a grainy flavour & texture to the pasta, which I really enjoy.

STRAWBERRY AND WATERMELON SMOOTHIE

11/08/2014

Watermelon to me, is the fruit of my childhood summers. It’s a reminder of those hot, lazy, hazy summer days as a child in Sydney. Cicadas singing in the heat, the air thick with humidity. Days were spent keeping cool, playing with the water hose in the backyard, hanging out at the swimming pool, eating ice-cream and chilled fruits. Now that I live in London, strawberries are the fruit that remind me of English summers. Reminders of my past and present days merge together.

BLUEBERRY AND LEMON BUNDT CAKE

07/08/2014

It is blueberry season and I have been buying blueberries by the load because they are so cheap at the moment. I’m freezing some, eating them raw and baking with them. I bought a bundt cake tin recently and this is my first bake with it. I love how it makes your cakes look retro and so appealing. I was reluctant to cut into it.

PEACH BELLINI

04/08/2014

I discovered Saturn Peaches (also known as Doughnut Peaches or I like to call them squashed peaches) when I moved to London a few years ago. What I love about them is that they have a white flesh and are much sweeter than the regular peaches. You will find them in all the shops and markets at this time of the year. In keeping with my Italian theme and my recent weekend away in Milan (click here), a peach Bellini is a great summery drink to kick start your weekend (although it must be noted, a peach Bellini is a classic Venetian cocktail).

TRAVEL: A SHORT GUIDE TO MILAN

03/08/2014

I recently went to Milan to visit an Irish friend who has made this commercial yet vibrant city his home. It was a short 3 day trip. I had been to Milan before but once only in 1999 (I feel really old). To think that was nearly 15 years ago!

Milan is the 2nd most populated city in Italy after Rome, situated in the Lombardy region. It’s a sprawling metropolis interweaved with finance companies and most notably the mega Italian fashion houses that we’re all familiar with. I have to admit, Milan isn’t a particularly attractive city in Italian terms but it has some impressive landmarks and a great social scene. Piazza Del Duomo is the busiest tourist attraction in Milan. It marks the city centre and from this vantage point you have impressive views of the Duomo, Palace Royal and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.
