I woke up the next morning still full of food from our memorable dinner the night before. We were treated to an Indian feast of huge proportions and portions. Special guest chef Sanjay travelled all the way from Dublin to Ballynahinch Castle to prepare us a meal that was fitting of royalty.

An adventurous boat trip was scheduled on our second day of the Lens & Larder retreat but I wasn't prepared for how amazing the location and setting was for day 2 of our retreat. It was a cold day enveloped by grey skies. We boarded a fishing boat from Roundstone and made our way to an uninhabited island called Inishlaken. There was once a small population on this tiny island until it was completely abandoned in 1954. Now, only the rabbits live on the island. The old schoolhouse would be the location of our next workshop. It was an extreme privilege to have been given reign of the schoolhouse.

It has never been more apt for me to say this, but it’s all about being in the right place at the right time. I had been wanting to participate in a food styling/photography workshop for the last couple of years but I was waiting for the right one to come along.

My patience was rewarded and the stars had aligned in my favour. It just so happened that my friend alerted me to a post on Instagram about an upcoming retreat called to be held in Connemara, Ireland. The location was enticing and something about it felt right. I ummed and ahhed for days about the cost. Should I, shouldn’t I? In the end, I went with my gut instinct and just went for it. I nabbed myself a spot on the retreat, paid the deposit and was locked in.

I’m heading to the west coast of Ireland tomorrow for a much anticipated food photography and styling workshop hosted by Imen of and taught by Susan Spungen and Beth Kirby of Local Milk Blog. I have been looking forward to this trip (ok more like really, really excited!) since I booked myself a spot. The location of where we are staying looks stunning and I cannot wait to arrive at Ballynahinch Castle and meet everyone.

I woke up to the rain being whipped by the wind against the window pane. I got out of bed and looked outside to find a dark day blanketed by grey clouds. It was cold, the ground was wet. It was one of those days that inspires you to cozy up by the fireplace (which I don’t have) on a lounge chair. Instead, without deliberation I was going to put on my wellies and go for walk in Hampstead Heath.

Although I have been living away from Sydney for over 3 years, I try to stay connected with what is happening in my home town. I feel like I have been away for so long and I have this fear that I will be left behind. The day that I do return to Sydney, I'm afraid I will no longer be in "the loop". Friends will talk about unfamiliar places making me feel like the new kid on the block. It is inevitable and I should just accept that I will be a temporary tourist, almost a stranger to the city I once called home. On the one hand I know Sydney so well, but on the other hand I am like a faraway foreigner to her. This is why I try to desperately stay in touch, to stay updated.

Hello October and hello Autumn (Fall), it's great to see you again. With your arrival it can only mean one thing. Figs.

Figs are one of those fruits that I associate with Italy. I'm not sure why but it might be that I have seen many Italian cooking shows over the years that include this fruit in their recipes. So when I see figs in stores, eat them and cook with them, I think of Italy, in a good way. I also think of Autumn. The second fig harvest of the year is upon us. The rich, dark, purple hues that come about at this time of the year.
